The E-Reader Evolution

Having just received my first Kindle this Christmas, I realize I’m a little late to the e-reader game. However, even after owning it for such a short amount of time, I’ve become quite enamored. I can only think back to my college experiences and think, “Why didn’t they have this kind of thing when I was in college?” Not just for my general reading pleasure, but I can only drool over the fortune it would have saved me on textbooks. What is Project Gutenberg?

Project Gutenberg is a site that offers over 36,000 free ebooks to download. Users can download these books on their PC, Mac, Kindle, Android, iOS, or other portable platforms. Users can choose from Kindle, ePub, HTML and simple text formats. This site is completely free and no registration is needed or fee however they do encourage people to donate funding to keep the site going. Donations help Project Gutenberg to buy and digitize more books. The founder of Project Gutenberg, Michael Hart invented ebooks in 1971, and has continued to inspired the advancement of ebooks. The mission statement of Project Gutenberg is, “to encourage the creation and distribution of eBooks. The mission is, as much as possible, to encourage all those who are interested in making eBooks and helping to give them away. In fact, Project Gutenberg approves about 99% of all requests from those who would like to make our eBooks and give them away, within their various local copyright limitations. Project Gutenberg is powered by ideas, ideals, and by idealism. Project Gutenberg is not powered by financial or political power. Therefore Project Gutenberg is powered totally by volunteers.”

Introduction to the OWL Purdue Online Writing Lab

The OWL also known as the online writing lab is located within the Purdue University and they house writing resources, instructional material, and they provide free services to students, the community and users all over the world. Their mission statement says the Purdue University Writing Lab and Purdue Online Writing Lab (OWL) are focused on helping clients in their overall development of their writing skills. It doesn't matter what their skill level entails they will are available to help through several different ways such as online participation, community engagement, and online consultations. The Purdue Writing Lab also assists the Purdue, West Lafayette campus and they coordinate with local literacy steps.

Expensive Textbooks to Continue to Burden Students

College students everywhere continuously deal with the heavy load of textbooks not just in weight but in high prices too. I remember textbooks being high priced when I went to college and there was always a rush to try to get the used version of a book. New textbooks would cost upwards of $130 or more. It's only been several years since I graduated from college and the prices have climbed to astronomical rates since that time.

Many of these books have been around hundreds of years and it is special to see the advancement of technology. Some Presidents Really Just Don’t Matter

One of my favorite historical books is James Loewen’s book, Lies My Teacher Told Me: Everything Your American History Book Got Wrong. The title is a bit deceptive, of course; the book doesn’t have everything our history books got wrong, of course. But it’s an eye-opening introduction into the major things that we are erroneously taught, and makes several valid points that we should all at least be exposed to and consider.

One point is that our history books often leave out key figures and events while spending entire pages on pointless subject matter. Take past presidents, for example. Many history books spend an entire page per president when, in fact, many presidents did so little or were so lackluster that a paragraph—or less—would suffice in depicting their importance in our history.
