If you think that American history textbooks are bad because they exclude the achievements of women and minorities, think again. Here are some choice cuts from Foreign Policy magazine’s list of The World’s Worst Textbooks.
- In Chinese textbooks, the Chinese invasion of Tibet in 1950 is left out, as is the Sino-Vietnamese War of 1979, a war that China started because of Vietnam’s invasion of Cambodia. China says they only fight wars of self-defense and these events don't fit into that image.
- After September 11, King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia has ordered all of the passages in Saudi texbooks calling Christians, Zionists and Westerners enemies of Muslims be removed. The change is slow, but they are working on it, apparently. People of Saudi origins made up 15 out of the 19 bombers on September 11.
Yikes. I'll stick with my entitled white explorers any day!
